Ben Walch – we knew you’d be back!
So Ben, you’re back at inControl after less than a year away. What have you been doing, and why did you leave?
I left partly for family reasons and to help out a beverage company in South Wales that needed support with commissioning and optimising a bottling line. My father works there as Engineering Manager and needed additional engineering support to get their lines running at their best.
I was working on commissioning, improving line speed, and reducing stoppages. I ended up reprogramming the software for a new filling line and running the new labelling machine. Most of the PLCs on site were Siemens S7s of various ages, which I’m totally comfortable with. I was also involved in setting up new maintenance scheduling and monitoring systems for the factory.
But I wanted to get back to inControl and work on a range of diverse projects. I never really wanted to leave — I just felt I needed to support my father at a time when he needed it most.
And what did you miss about inControl while you were away?
Mainly the work environment and the sense of empowerment I value as an engineer. The directors here trust you to get on with the work you’re responsible for, but they’re always there when you need their experience or approval. It’s a great place to be.
What sorts of projects have we got lined up for you at inControl?
Right now, I’m working on an MES project for a chocolate manufacturing company, which is quite exciting. After that, I know there are several other projects lined up for me.
And what’s the best thing about being back?
Seeing everyone again. It’s like I never left, and I’ve had a really warm welcome.
How long will you be with us this time?
Forever, hopefully…
