Will flies in first year at inControl

Last July, Will Clements walked through the doors of inControl as a 16-year-old on his very first job. Twelve months later, he’s not only settled in but is already making the leap from business admin into the world of engineering.

When Will joined inControl last July, he had just turned sixteen. “I started on 1st July 2024, and this was the first job I’ve had,” he says. He came into the business as a Business Administration Apprentice while beginning his Level 3 Business Administrator course at Chesterfield College, which he’s close to completing.

Over the past year, his role has naturally shifted. “The job began how I expected it to, but over time I’ve taken on more tasks on the engineering side of the business,” Will explains. “It’s been surprising to see the complexity of some of the projects we work on, and just how much knowledge goes into the systems that most of us use every day without realising the work behind them.”

The highlight for Will has been developing his skills across both admin and engineering, as well as settling into the team. “At first it felt strange going from school to working alongside people the same age as my parents,” he admits, “but over time I’ve built friendships and feel comfortable working with everyone here.”

Endorsing Will’s growth in the role, and under the close supervision of his line manager Steve Rowland, he was allowed to perform support work on an engineering project here, building repetitive SCADA graphics and creating tagging list for the objects. Out of the blue and in recognition of Will’s good work, the customer was so impressed with his work that he was given a discretionary reward (some vouchers), and said that “… the speed and accuracy of Will’s work was even better than some engineers with years of experience behind them…”.

Looking ahead, Will is keen to move further into engineering. “My next step is to join an engineering course to build my skills and use them to support more projects with the engineers,” he says. With inControl’s support in finding the right training, he’s setting his sights firmly on that path.

We’re proud to see how far Will has come in just a year, and excited to support him as he continues to grow with the business.
