Movember at InControl – The meaning of the moustache

29/11/2022

Statistically, Men will die on average 4.5 years earlier than women, and for largely preventable reasons.

The team at InControl had no issues confronting this charity/movement head-on, as it tackled many important issues the team have encountered, either directly or indirectly in the past, like many of you. Whether that be regarding Men’s mental or physical health, we had a passion and a desire to raise awareness.

Whilst it’s all great that you can vote for who has the best ‘tash in the company over on our LinkedIn, we wanted to bring it back a little bit and talk about the importance of the movement.

The Movember website provides readers with information, resources, and statistics. These resources and information could be vital to put you in a better position when traversing some of the topics surrounding Men’s physical and mental health. Here are the ‘5 things every man should know’:

1 – Spend time with people who make you feel good.

Life can throw us curveballs. Yet even when things seem tough, there’s a lot we can do to look after ourselves and others. That’s why Movember provides reliable, expert information to help men cope and live happier, healthier, longer lives – no matter what life throws at us.

2 – Talk, more.

Men sometimes aren’t comfortable reaching out and opening up about life’s challenges – or they think they’ll be a burden on their friends if they do.

Statistically, 4 out of 5 suicides are male, which is an alarming study when also paired with the fact that 60 men commit suicide every hour of every day. It might be easier said than done to simply suggest reaching out to someone, but quite often it’s getting reached out to which can be more impactful.

3 – Know the numbers.

Prostate cancer is the most diagnosed cancer in men in the UK. Globally, more than 1.4 million men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year. Knowing the facts and numbers could help you or anyone you share the information with.

4 – Know thy nuts. Simple.

Testicular cancer is the #1 cancer among young guys. Yet 62% of those who are most at risk don’t know how to check themselves. When caught early, testicular cancer is highly treatable and highly curable.

In the unlikely event that you’re diagnosed with testicular cancer, Movember has created ‘Nuts & Bolts’, which is a tool to tackle testicular cancer.

5 – Move, more.

Statistically, 34% of men are overweight, which is higher than the percentage of women. Obesity is linked to more than 60 chronic diseases, but Movember promotes facts and information regarding action to take. Discover more, here.
